We start with his early life
Then retell the incident on Scimitar Hill when he won his VC
and next the story of his later life until he died in 1943
The newspapers of the time gave a lot of coverage to him and the incident.
The man he rescued was Trooper Arthur Andrews. Here Andrews' grandson recalls his grandfather's life.
The Victoria Cross is Britain's highest award for gallantry
Others from Berkshire have won the VC since it was instituted
You can read more about the Battle of Scimitar Hill
and some of the men who fought alongside him
and finally we reproduce his story as told inn the boy's magazine The Victor in 1968
